The wars were a very difficult time for many people. They changed the way people lived on the continent forever.

Conflicts often started because of how people used the land. Indigenous groups had their own laws and social ways. Settlers followed English laws and did not always understand them.

Before this, James Cook had sailed the east coast in 1770. He took possession of the land for Britain in August 1770. He did this on Possession Island near the Cape York Peninsula. Captain Arthur Phillip was the first Governor of the colony. He tried to live in kindness with the local people.

Different areas saw different levels of fighting. The fighting was most intense in Queensland and the northeast.

This was because Queensland had a very large Indigenous population. One estimate says there were 300,000 Indigenous people in Queensland. In contrast, Victoria had only about 45,000 people. Other hard jobs for Indigenous groups included fighting new diseases. Smallpox, the flu, and measles made many people very sick.

Indigenous Australians had their own ways of fighting. They used weapons like spears, clubs, and boomerangs.

Some fighting was for ritual trials or revenge attacks. These were often small and aimed at showing group strength. They were not meant to conquer huge amounts of territory. This is very different from how European armies fought. Understanding these different ways helps us see the whole history.
