Federation of Australia

history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Federation of Australia was a way for six separate lands to join together. These lands were called colonies. They were New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. Before they joined, each colony had its own rules and government. Some other places like Fiji and New Zealand were part of the plan. However, they decided not to join the new group. By joining together, they created the Commonwealth of Australia. This new system is called federalism.

In this new system, the colonies became states. They kept their own local governments and rules. But they also agreed to have one federal government. This big government handles things that affect the whole nation. For example, it manages things like trade and national laws. This way, the states can look after their own people. At the same time, the whole country can act as one team.

People had been talking about joining for a long time. As early as 1842, an article suggested a union of the colonies. In 1848, a man named William Charles Wentworth proposed a congress. Later, in the 1880s, more people felt like one nation. New tools like the telegraph helped people talk more easily. This made people feel more connected to each other. Many people began to feel proud to be Australian.

Making this happen was a very hard job. Many people had big worries about the change. Smaller colonies feared the bigger ones would take all the power. They also worried about losing money from taxes. Some groups, like the labour movement, had different ideas too. They wanted the new government to help workers more. Leaders like Sir Henry Parkes worked hard to solve these problems. He was a key leader in the 1890s.

Finally, the plan became real on January 1, 1901. This was when the Constitution of Australia came into force. The Constitution is the set of rules for the nation. After that, a big election was held in March 1901. Sir Edmund Barton became the first Prime Minister. He was a leader who had worked for federation for a long time. This big change shaped how Australia works today.
