history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Long ago, six separate lands lived in Australia. These were called colonies. They were New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. Each colony had its own rules. But many people wanted them to work as one team. This idea was called federation.

Some people had many worries. Smaller colonies feared the big ones would take all the power. They also worried about new taxes. Even New Zealand and Fiji chose not to join.

Leaders worked hard to solve these problems. Sir Henry Parkes was a very important leader in this move. In the 1890s, they held meetings to write a set of rules. These rules are called a constitution.
