He was a major founder of the modern American Mafia. He also helped lead a group called Murder, Inc. This group was a team of contract killers. They often worked out of a candy store in Brooklyn. Because he was so violent, people gave him many scary nicknames. Some called him "The Mad Hatter" or "The Lord High Executioner." Others called him "The Earthquake" or "The One-Man Army."

Anastasia's life began in Parghelia, Italy, in 1902.

He was one of nine children born to Bartolomeo and Marianna. After his father died following World War I, his life changed. In 1919, Albert and three of his brothers moved to the United States. They worked as longshoremen on the Brooklyn waterfront. During this time, he faced many legal problems. He was convicted of murder in 1921, but he won a retrial in 1922. He later changed his family name from Anastasio to Anastasia.

As time passed, Anastasia rose to great power in the criminal world. He became a leader in the International Longshoremen's Association. He also made strong allies with famous bosses like Charles "Lucky" Luciano. In 1931, a conflict called the Castellammarese War broke out. During this war, Anastasia helped Luciano take control of the crime groups. Luciano then put Anastasia in charge of Murder, Inc. to reward his loyalty. This group operated for about ten years. It was a very violent time in New York history.

During World War II, Anastasia's life took a different turn. He wanted to help the U.S. government during the war. He helped arrange a deal to protect the waterfront. He also joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He reached the rank of technical sergeant. He even trained soldiers to work as longshoremen in Pennsylvania. Because of his service, he became a U.S. citizen in 1943. After the war, he moved his family to a ranch house in New Jersey. He also owned a dressmaking factory in Pennsylvania.

Eventually, Anastasia became the boss of his own crime family. He took this position after the Mangano brothers disappeared in 1951. However, his leadership did not last forever. Other crime leaders, like Vito Genovese, did not like him. Genovese thought Anastasia was too unstable and unpredictable. He also thought Anastasia broke the rules of the Commission. In 1957, Genovese ordered the murder of Anastasia. After he died, Carlo Gambino took over as the new boss. This change helped shape the future of organized crime in America.
