Because of his fancy style, people called him "the Dapper Don." He also became known as "the Teflon Don." This was because he won three big trials in the 1980s. Later, the law found that people had cheated to help him win.

His life in crime began when he was very young. Gotti grew up in a poor family in Brooklyn. He and his brothers lived with very little money. At age 14, he had a bad accident with a cement mixer. The heavy machine fell and crushed his toes. This left him with a permanent limp for the rest of his life. He dropped out of high school when he was only 16 years old. He soon began working with street gangs and other criminals.

As he grew up, Gotti worked his way up through the Gambino family. He was a student of a leader named Aniello Dellacroce. Gotti became a very good earner for the group. He ran illegal gambling and helped with large robberies. One famous event was the Lufthansa heist at Kennedy Airport in 1978. This was one of the largest cash robberies in history. Gotti was a very tough and smart leader. People in the law saw that he was a natural leader.

In 1985, Gotti made a big and violent choice. He helped arrange the murder of the boss, Paul Castellano. After this, Gotti became the new boss of the family. He was very wealthy during this time. It is said he earned between $5 million and $20 million every year. However, the FBI was watching him very closely. His own partner, Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, eventually helped the police. Gravano agreed to testify against Gotti in 1991.

In 1992, the law finally caught up with him. A jury found Gotti guilty of many serious crimes. These included murder, racketeering, and tax evasion. He was sent to prison for life without any chance of leaving.
