Joe Masseria was a powerful leader in the New York City underworld. He was a boss of what is now called the Genovese crime family. This group was one of the Five Families in the city. People often called him "Joe the Boss." He held this top position from 1922 until 1931. His life was marked by many fights for control.

His rise to power involved many dangerous events. In 1922, gunmen tried to kill him on 2nd Avenue. Masseria ducked into a store to hide from the attackers. He survived the shooting and was found by police later. He was sitting on a bed in a dazed state. His straw hat even had two bullet holes in it. This event made him famous among other criminals.

Masseria was born on January 17, 1886, in Sicily. His family worked as tailors in a place called Menfi. He moved to the United States in 1902. In New York, he joined the Morello crime family. He worked alongside leaders like Gaetano Reina. By 1909, he faced his first legal trouble for burglary.

In 1930, a large conflict began called the Castellammarese War. Masseria fought a rival group from Brooklyn. This group was led by Salvatore Maranzano and Joseph Bonanno. Masseria used Giuseppe Morello as his strategic adviser. The war was a struggle to see who would rule. Many people were killed during this time.

Joe Masseria died because of a betrayal by his own man. Charles "Lucky" Luciano was one of his gunmen. Luciano made a secret deal with the rival leader, Maranzano. On April 15, 1931, Luciano led Masseria to a restaurant. The restaurant was named Nuova Villa Tammaro on Coney Island. While they played cards, gunmen killed Masseria. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Queens.
