Joe Masseria was a famous crime boss in New York City. He was born in Sicily in 1886. His family worked as tailors. Joe moved to the United States in 1902. He joined a group called the Morello family. Later, he became the leader of what is now the Genovese family. People called him "Joe the Boss."

Joe had many enemies. In 1922, gunmen tried to kill him on a street. He survived the attack. This made him very famous among other gangsters. In 1930, a big conflict began. It was called the Castellammarese War. Joe fought a rival group led by Salvatore Maranzano. This war was a fight for power in the city.

Joe's end came from a betrayal. One of his own men was Lucky Luciano. Luciano made a secret deal with Maranzano. On April 15, 1931, Luciano led Joe to a restaurant. While they played cards, gunmen killed Joe. No one was ever caught for the crime. Joe is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens.
