Joseph Bonanno was a leader of a crime group in New York. He was born in Sicily in 1905. When he was three, his family moved to Brooklyn. He went back to Italy later. In 1924, he came back to the United States. He hid on a Cuban fishing boat to get here.

At age 26, he became a boss. This made him one of the youngest bosses ever. He ran his family from 1931 to 1968. He also ran real businesses. He owned coat shops and laundry shops. He even owned a trucking company.

In 1963, Bonanno made a plan with Joseph Magliocco. They wanted to hurt other leaders. The other leaders found out. Because of this, Bonanno fled to Canada. He later returned to New York. Then, he disappeared for a while. This led to a hard time called the Banana War. It lasted until 1968. After that, he moved to Arizona. He wrote a book about his life in 1983. He died in Tucson in 2002.
