Carlo Gambino was a leader of a crime group in New York. He was born in Sicily, Italy, in 1902. He moved to the United States in 1921. He worked for a small trucking firm at first.

Later, Carlo became a powerful boss. He led the Mangano family. After its leader died, the group took his name. It became the Gambino crime family. He also helped lead a group called The Commission. This group helped different crime families work together.

Carlo was a very successful leader. He only went to prison once. This was for twenty-two months in 1937. He stayed in power for many years. His group had 500 soldiers and 1,000 associates.

Some other bosses tried to stop him. One man named Joseph Bonanno made plans to kill him. But these plans did not work. Carlo remained in charge until he died in 1976. He lived in a house in Brooklyn and a home in Long Island. He had four children and a wife named Catherine.
