Carlo Gambino was a very powerful crime boss in New York City. He was the leader of the group known as the Gambino crime family.

This group was one of the most important criminal organizations in the country. Gambino played a major role in leading a group called The Commission. The Commission was a governing body that helped different crime families work together. It was designed to settle arguments and decide which families controlled certain areas. This helped to prevent many gang wars from happening in the city.

Gambino's life began in Palermo, Sicily, in Italy. He was born on August 24, 1902, to Tommaso Gambino and Felice Castellano.

His family belonged to the Sicilian Mafia in the Passo di Rigano neighborhood. In December 1921, he traveled to the United States. He arrived at Norfolk, Virginia, as a stowaway on a ship called the SS Vincenzo Florio. Once he reached New York, he worked for a small family trucking firm. He later lived in a house in Brooklyn and a summer home in Massapequa, New York.

His path to leadership involved many changes in the criminal world. In the early 1930s, there was a conflict called the Castellammarese War. This war was fought between leaders named Joe Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano.

After the war, the gangs were organized into Five Families. Gambino eventually joined the family led by Vincent Mangano. When the leader Albert Anastasia took over, Gambino became an underboss. After Anastasia died in 1957, Gambino took control of the group. The family then took his name and became the Gambino crime family.

Gambino was a very successful leader for many decades. During his time in charge, his group was quite large.

The Gambino crime family had 500 soldiers and over 1,000 associates. He was known for staying out of prison for most of his career. He only served twenty-two months in prison for tax evasion in 1937. In 1962, his son Thomas married the daughter of another boss named Joseph Lucchese. This marriage helped the two families work together to control Idlewild Airport. This airport is known today as John F. Kennedy Airport.

Even powerful leaders face many hard jobs and threats. In 1963, a boss named Joseph Bonanno made plans to kill Gambino.

Bonanno wanted to work with Joseph Magliocco to carry out the plan. They even assigned a hitman named Joseph Colombo to do the work. However, these plans did not succeed in stopping Gambino. He remained a leader of the Commission until he died in 1976. He died from a heart attack after a long career that lasted over fifty years.
