He led the Gambino crime family for many years. He took over the group in 1976. He remained the leader until he was killed in 1985. Castellano was born in Brooklyn on June 26, 1915. His parents were immigrants from Italy. His father worked as a butcher. This early job helped Paul later in life. He learned how to work with meat and numbers. These skills helped him start his own businesses.

Castellano liked to act like a businessman. He used his training to run a poultry business called Dial Poultry. This company supplied meat to 300 butchers in New York. He also made a lot of money from the concrete industry. His son Philip ran a company called Scara-Mix Concrete Corporation. This business had a near monopoly on concrete in Staten Island. Castellano also helped control the "Concrete Club." This was a group of contractors who handled very large building projects. They gave a small part of their money back to the crime family.

The history of his leadership was full of change. He became the boss after Carlo Gambino died in 1976. Gambino chose Castellano to lead the family. This choice surprised many people. Castellano stayed in his large 17-room mansion on Staten Island. He lived a very quiet life inside his home. He wore silk dressing gowns and velvet slippers. Because he stayed inside, he was often away from his workers. This made some people in the family unhappy with him.

Many people had problems with Castellano's rules. A man named John Gotti was one of them. Gotti thought Castellano was too greedy. Gotti also had a fight with him over money from airport hijackings. Castellano had also banned the sale of drugs. This was a very big rule in the criminal world. Law enforcement was also watching him closely. In 1983, the FBI put secret listening devices in his mansion. These devices recorded many things that the police used in court. Castellano faced many legal charges during this time.

The end of his leadership came very quickly in 1985. A leader named Aniello Dellacroce died of cancer that year. Castellano did not go to the funeral for Dellacroce. This was seen as a big insult to the group. On December 16, 1985, Castellano went to a meeting. He went to a restaurant called Sparks Steak House.

A group of men was waiting for him there. They shot Castellano and his driver, Thomas Bilotti, outside the restaurant. This event changed the Gambino family forever.
