He was born on 16 November 1930, in the countryside of Corleone, Italy. Riina rose through the ranks of a criminal group called the Corleonesi. By the mid-1970s, he had taken control of this group. He eventually became known by the nickname "the boss of bosses." His leadership was marked by a very violent way of doing things. He used many different methods to stay in power and scare his rivals.

Riina used a strategy of extreme violence to reach the top. He fought a massive conflict known as the Second Mafia War. During this war, his group killed many other Mafia bosses. For example, Stefano Bontade and Salvatore Inzerillo were killed in 1981. This conflict led to nearly a thousand murders across Sicily. Riina also broke old Mafia rules by targeting women and children. He even killed innocent people to distract the police. A man named Giovanni Brusca estimated that Riina ordered 100 to 200 murders.

As Riina grew stronger, he began to fight against the Italian state. He wanted to terrify the people who worked for the law. In 1982, a man named Pio La Torre tried to pass a law against the Mafia. Riina's group killed him shortly after. Later that year, General Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa was also killed.

These acts of violence caused great anger among the public. Many people wanted the government to take stronger action against the Mafia. This pressure helped lead to new laws and more police work.

One of the most important moments happened in 1992. Two famous judges, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, were assassinated. Falcone died in a huge explosion on a highway near Palermo. Two months later, Borsellino was killed by a car bomb. These deaths changed everything for the Italian government. The public was outraged by the loss of these brave leaders. In response, the authorities began a massive crackdown to stop Riina's organization. This period of intense law enforcement changed how the state fought organized crime.

Riina spent a long time hiding from the police. He was a fugitive for 23 years after being indicted for murder. He was finally captured in 1993.

After his arrest, his group even bombed art galleries and churches. Riina was sentenced to life in prison for his many crimes. He lived under very strict prison rules called the Article 41-bis regime. He remained in prison until he died on 17 November 2017. His life shows how one person's choices can change a whole country.
