Luciano Leggio was a major leader in the Sicilian Mafia. This is a criminal group in Italy. He led a specific group called the Corleonesi. This group started in the town of Corleone. He is often called Liggio by many people. This name came from a mistake in court papers in the 1960s. He helped his group become the most powerful in Sicily.

Leggio grew up in very poor conditions on a small farm. He was one of ten children in his family. He began a life of crime while he was still a teenager. At age 18, he was caught stealing corn. After his first jail time, he killed the man who told on him. In 1945, a boss named Michele Navarra hired him. Leggio soon began fighting for power within the group. He even took over a farm by using a gun.

While in prison during the late 1940s, Leggio met other criminals. He met Salvatore Riina, who was only 19 years old at the time. They became partners after Riina was released from jail. They also worked with Calogero Bagarella and Bernardo Provenzano. In 1948, a man named Placido Rizzotto was kidnapped and killed. Two men later said they helped Leggio with this crime. Leggio had to go into hiding after this event.

Conflict grew between Leggio and Michele Navarra. In June 1958, Navarra tried to have Leggio killed. Leggio escaped that meeting with only minor injuries. A few weeks later, on August 2, 1958, Navarra was shot and killed. This happened on a country road in a Fiat 1100. More killings followed between different groups until 1963. Leggio was eventually named the boss of the Corleone Mafia.

Leggio was arrested in Corleone on May 14, 1964. He was sent to Ucciardone prison in Palermo. He was later set free in 1968 and 1969 because of bad evidence. Some people even sent scary letters to the judges. A magistrate named Cesare Terranova tried to bring him to court again. Leggio was finally caught in Milan on May 16, 1974. He was sent to prison for life in Sardinia. He died of a heart attack in prison in 1993. He was 68 years old.
