Jacques Mesrine was a famous criminal from France who lived from 1936 to 1979. He was known for many different crimes like bank robberies and kidnappings. He committed these acts in France, Canada, and the United States. Mesrine was very good at using disguises to hide his face. Because of this skill, people called him "The Man of a Thousand Faces."

Some people saw him as a hero like Robin Hood. This was because he had a very charismatic personality. He often traveled with glamorous women and made many news headlines.

Mesrine's life changed many times as he grew up. He was born in Clichy, near Paris, in 1936. As a young man, he served in the French Army. He was a parachutist during the Algerian War. He even received the Cross for Military Valour from General Charles de Gaulle. However, his family thought his behavior changed after his time in the army.

After the army, he tried to work normal jobs. He even worked well making models for an architecture company. But he eventually returned to a life of crime.

He spent many years moving between different countries. In 1968, he moved to Quebec, Canada, with a woman named Jeanne Schneider. They tried to kidnap a millionaire named Georges Deslauriers, but the plan failed. Later, they went to the United States. In 1969, they were arrested in Texarkana, Arkansas. Mesrine was sent to a Canadian prison for ten years. He escaped from the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul prison in 1972. After that, he and a man named Jean-Paul Mercier robbed many banks in Montreal.

Mesrine was famous for being able to escape from very tough jails. In 1973, he was sent to La Santé prison in France. People thought this prison was impossible to escape from. However, Mesrine and a man named François Besse did escape in 1978. They used a grappling iron and a ladder to climb a 14-metre wall. This made Mesrine the first person to ever escape from La Santé.

While he was in prison, he wrote a book called L'Instinct de Mort. This book told the story of his life and his crimes.

His actions caused the French government to make new rules. After his book was published, France passed a "Son of Sam" law. This law was made to stop criminals from making money from their crimes. Mesrine remained a wanted man for a long time. He even appeared on the cover of Paris Match magazine in 1978. He was very hard for the police to catch because he was so good at hiding. His life was so interesting that a film was made about him in 2008.
