John Stanley Joseph Wojtowicz was an American man whose life became very famous. He was born on March 9, 1945. His father was Polish and his mother was Italian-American. After he grew up, John joined the military. He served in the Vietnam War. In 1967, he married a woman named Carmen Bifulco. They had two children together. Later, in 1971, John met Elizabeth Eden in New York City. They had a public wedding ceremony that same year.

In August 1972, John was involved in a bank robbery. He went to a Chase Manhattan Bank in Brooklyn. He was with two other men named Salvatore Naturile and Robert Westenberg. Westenberg left before the robbery started because he saw a police car. John and Salvatore stayed to try the robbery. They held seven bank workers for fourteen hours. During the event, an FBI agent killed Salvatore. John was then arrested by the police.

People had different ideas about why the robbery happened. A newspaper called the Los Angeles Times said it was to pay for Elizabeth Eden's surgery. This was a surgery to help her change her gender. However, a writer named Arthur Bell had a different view. He believed the robbery was part of a Mafia plan that went wrong. After the event, a court sentenced John to 20 years in prison. He went to Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary. He served five years before he was released in 1978.

John's story became a very famous movie in 1975. The movie was called Dog Day Afternoon. It starred an actor named Al Pacino. The film won an Academy Award for its script. John had many feelings about the movie. He wrote a letter to The New York Times about it. He said the movie was only 30% accurate. He felt it changed parts of his life. For example, the movie made it seem like he did not talk to his mother.

Later in his life, John lived in Brooklyn. He was the subject of several documentaries about his past. One documentary was called The Third Memory. It was shown in museums in Paris and Chicago. These films looked at how movies can change our memories. John died of cancer on January 2, 2006. He was 60 years old. He passed away at his mother's home. His life remains a story that people still study today.
