In 1976, Pistone began a very important undercover mission. He used the fake name Donnie Brasco to hide his true identity. He pretended to be a low-level jewel thief. The FBI even erased his name from their own office files. This way, his friends and co-workers would not know where he was. The mission was called "Sun-Apple" because it happened in Miami and New York City.

Before this, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover did not want agents working undercover. He worried they might become corrupt or dishonest. Pistone proved that undercover work was a vital tool for the FBI.
