Ronald Arthur Biggs was a man from London who became famous for his role in a crime. In 1963, he helped plan and carry out a famous event called the Great Train Robbery. This robbery happened on August 8, which was also Biggs's 34th birthday. A gang of men stopped a Royal Mail train to take its money. They managed to take 120 out of 128 mailbags from the train. The group stole a huge amount of money, totaling about £2.6 million. Biggs's own share of the stolen money was £147,000.

After the robbery, the police began a large investigation to find the gang. Biggs was caught in South London three weeks after the crime. In 1964, nine members of the gang, including Biggs, were sent to prison. Most of them received sentences of 30 years. Biggs did not stay in prison for very long, however. On July 8, 1965, he escaped from Wandsworth Prison. He used a rope ladder to climb the prison wall. He then dropped down onto a waiting removal van to make his escape.

Biggs spent many years living as a fugitive, which means he was running from the law. He traveled to many different countries to stay hidden. He first went to Brussels and then to Paris to get new identity papers. Later, he moved to Australia, living in cities like Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne. In 1970, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. He stayed in Brazil for a long time because there was no agreement between Brazil and the United Kingdom to send criminals back. This meant he could not be sent home to face his trial.

While living in Brazil, Biggs became a very well-known figure. He could not work a normal job, so his family hosted barbecues for tourists. People paid to meet him and hear his stories about the robbery. He also became involved with music and recorded songs. One of his albums was called Mailbag Blues, which told the story of his life. He even sang on songs with famous punk bands. His fame was so large that his face appeared on mugs and T-shirts in Rio.

Life was not always easy for Biggs during his years in hiding. In 1981, a group of men tried to kidnap him from Brazil. They took him on a boat, but the boat had mechanical problems. The Barbados coastguard eventually rescued him and his kidnappers. Many years later, Biggs finally returned to the United Kingdom. He spent his final years in prison and then in a nursing home. He passed away in December 2013. His life remains a famous story of a man who lived on the run.
