Alan Bond was a famous and controversial businessman. He was born in London, England, on April 22, 1938. When he was twelve years old, he moved to Australia with his parents and sister. He lived in Fremantle, which is near the city of Perth. In his early years, Bond had some trouble with the law. He faced charges for stealing and being on property without permission. Bond became a very successful property developer in Western Australia. He built many things, like apartments along the Swan River. His business grew into many different areas. He owned companies for making beer and mining for gold. He even owned television stations and airships. In 1987, his company founded Bond University on the Gold Coast. One of Bond's biggest moments was in the world of sports. He provided the money for a team to compete in the America's Cup. In 1983, his team, Australia II, won the race. This was a huge deal because the New York Yacht Club had held the cup since 1851. This win broke the longest winning streak in sports history. Because of this success, Bond was named Australian of the Year in 1978. He also received the Order of Australia as an Officer. Many people in Australia saw him as a hero during this time.

However, Bond's business career also involved many illegal actions. He was involved in the WA Inc scandals during the 1980s. He also bought the Channel Nine television network for $1 billion in 1987. This deal involved a lot of debt and complex payments. Eventually, his businesses began to fail. In 1992, he was declared bankrupt. He owed a huge amount of money, which was about $1.8 billion. In 1997, he was sentenced to seven years in prison. He was found guilty of fraud for moving $1.2 billion unfairly.

He even made it onto a list of wealthy people in 2008. His life remained full of big changes and legal battles. He died on June 5, 2015, in Perth. This happened after he had heart surgery and faced complications. His life has been told in many movies and TV shows. People still study his story to understand how big business works.
