He was born in Belgium in 1934. His family moved to the United States to stay safe from the Nazis. They traveled through France, Spain, and Portugal by sea. His father started a jewelry store in Kansas City, Missouri. Later, the family moved to Queens, New York. Rich attended high school in Manhattan and then went to New York University. He left college after one semester to start working in business.

Rich learned how to trade metals at a company called Philipp Brothers. He worked with a man named Pincus Green. In 1974, they started their own company in Switzerland. This company was called Marc Rich + Co. AG. It later became a huge company named Glencore. People called Rich "the King of Oil." He found new ways to trade oil using bank money. This helped him change how the whole world trades raw materials. He showed that traders did not need to own huge amounts of oil to make deals.

Rich did business with many different leaders and nations. He made deals with countries like Cuba, Chile, and Libya. Some of these countries were under trade bans. This meant the United States had rules against trading with them. Rich also traded oil with Iran after their revolution in 1979. He used a secret pipeline to sell Iranian oil to Israel. He also helped Israeli intelligence agents get contacts in Iran. Rich said he was just a businessman doing a service for people who wanted to buy or sell.

In 1983, the United States government brought many charges against Rich. These included tax evasion and fraud. He was also accused of breaking rules by trading with Iran. The charges were very serious and could have sent him to prison for a long time. Rich fled to Switzerland to avoid being arrested. He never came back to the United States. He even missed his daughter's funeral in 1996 because he was afraid of being caught. His net worth was estimated to be $2.5 billion.

On his very last day in office, President Bill Clinton gave Rich a pardon. A pardon means the government forgives a person for certain crimes. This decision caused a lot of arguments. Some people thought Rich's large donations to political groups helped him get the pardon. Others said that leaders in Israel asked the President to help Rich. Clinton later said he regretted making the choice. He felt it hurt his reputation. Rich died in 2013, many years after the pardon was given.
