Throughout his life, he has faced both great success and serious legal trouble. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, on August 25, 1944. His family was very involved in many different types of businesses. His father, George Montegu Black II, owned parts of many companies. These businesses made things, sold things, and shared news with the public.

Black learned how to run businesses by working with his family. In 1978, he and his brother Montegu took control of their family company, Ravelston. Over seven years, Conrad sold many parts of the company. He wanted to focus only on owning and running newspapers.
