He was known for playing tough characters in crime dramas. He often played men on both sides of the law. These roles included criminals or police officers. He was a leading man during the 1960s and 1970s. People in France loved his strong presence on screen. He was even voted the 23rd greatest Frenchman in a 2005 poll.

His journey to acting was quite unexpected. Before movies, Ventura was a professional wrestler. He used the name Lino Borrini during his wrestling career. An injury eventually forced him to stop wrestling. In 1953, a friend told director Jacques Becker about him. Becker wanted an Italian actor for a movie called Touchez pas au grisbi. Ventura first said no to the part. He eventually accepted the role of a character named Angelo. This single role made the whole acting profession notice him.

Ventura's career grew quickly after his successful debut. He worked with many great directors like Louis Malle and Claude Sautet. He often acted alongside the famous star Jean Gabin. They appeared together in films like Razzia sur la chnouf and Crime and Punishment. He also played a leader in the 1969 film Army of Shadows. In 1982, he was nominated for a Cesar Award for his role in Les Misérables. He stayed active in films until the year before he died in 1987.

Ventura was a man of deep kindness and purpose. His daughter, Linda, had an intellectual disability due to a stroke at birth. Because of this, he and his wife, Odette, founded a charity in 1966. They named it Perce-Neige, which means Snowdrop. The group helps children with special needs and their families. It grew from an association into a foundation. By 2023, the organization had thirty-nine different care establishments across France.

Even though he was a star in France, his heart stayed connected to his roots. He was born in Parma, Italy, to Giovanni Ventura and Luisa Borrini. He moved to France when he was seven years old. He spoke French perfectly without an accent. However, he always considered himself an Italian citizen first. He never took French citizenship because he wanted to honor his parents. He even spoke Italian with a slight French accent.
