Most people in Europe knew him by a different name. He called himself Count Alessandro di Cagliostro. He was an adventurer who claimed to be a magician. He practiced many ancient arts like alchemy and scrying. Alchemy is an old way of trying to change things using science and magic. He also practiced psychic healing to help people feel better. Some people thought he was a grand figure. Others believed he was a charlatan. A charlatan is someone who pretends to have special skills to fool others.

His life was full of many different jobs and secrets. He started as a student in a religious group. Later, he worked as a pharmacist on the island of Malta. In Rome, he even worked as a secretary for Cardinal Orsini.

He also spent time traveling and meeting many famous people. He once met the poet Elisa von der Recke in Mitau. He was even recommended as a doctor to Benjamin Franklin in Paris. Cagliostro was also a very skilled forger. This means he could make fake documents look very real. He could even forge letters that other people wrote. He used these skills to build a life of mystery.

Cagliostro's history is hard to trace because of many rumors.

He was born in Palermo, Sicily, to a poor family. His real name was Giuseppe Balsamo. Some people thought he came from a noble Greek family. He claimed he was an orphan from the island of Malta. A lawyer later found documents about his family tree. These papers showed his great-grandfather was named Matteo Martello. His family history was tied to the city of Palermo. This helped explain why he had Greek roots. Many people spent years trying to find out who he truly was.

He traveled through many different countries during his time. He visited Russia, Poland, and Germany. In 1777, he became a member of a group called the Freemasons in London. He later founded his own group called Egyptian Freemasonry in Lyon.

In 1785, he went to Paris to meet Cardinal Rohan. This led to a famous event called the Affair of the Diamond Necklace. He was arrested and held in the Bastille for nine months. He was eventually let go, but he was sent away from France. His travels took him across the whole continent.

Cagliostro's life ended in a very sad way. He went to Rome and was arrested by the Inquisition. Some say his own wife betrayed him to them. He was sent to a prison called Forte di San Leo. He lived there until he died on August 26, 1795. Even after his death, people kept talking about him. Famous writers like Alexandre Dumas wrote stories about his life. Many people still wonder if he was a true magician or just a clever trickster. His name remains a part of history and many famous books.
