He was born in Orbetello, Italy, around the year 1750. People often called him the Professor of Natural Magic. He was a very grand and flashy person. He did not just perform tricks for fun. He called his shows scientific experiments. He wanted people to think his magic was based on the rules of physics. This helped him become the most celebrated magician of his time.

Pinetti changed how magic shows were done in the theatre. Before him, many performers were like travelers called troubadours. They carried their tools in bags or under their arms. Pinetti brought his work into big, beautiful theatres. While others used tools made of tin or brass, he used gold and silver. He even had a stage with silk curtains and gold tables.

He wore clothes with gold embroidery. He would change his outfit three or four times during one show. One of his tricks used a pigeon and a ribbon. He projected a shadow of the bird on a wall. Then, he used a knife to cut the shadow of the bird's neck.

His career began when he was a teacher in Rome. He showed his students physics experiments that looked like magic. His friends liked them so much they told him to perform for the public. By 1780, he was performing in Germany. He used the impressive name Joseph Pinetti, Roman Professor of Mathematics. He was a huge star in Paris, France. People had to book their seats many weeks in advance. He was so famous that the King of France asked for a private show.

Success did not last forever for the Professor. In March 1784, a man named Henri Decremps wrote a book. The book was called La Magic Blanche Dévoilée, which means Natural Magic Disclosed. It explained how many magic tricks worked. Even though it did not name Pinetti, everyone knew it was about him. People stopped coming to his shows because the mystery was gone. Pinetti tried to fight back by writing his own book in June. He called it Amusements Physiques to teach people how to entertain others.

Pinetti traveled all over Europe and loved to show his wealth. In Berlin, he arrived in a coach with four white horses. He wore many fancy medals on his chest. This made the King of Prussia, Frederick the Great, very angry. The King told Pinetti to leave Berlin within one day. He said the city was not big enough for two kings. Pinetti then went to Russia, where the Czar gave him a large ring. Sadly, Pinetti lost his money on a bad business deal involving balloons. He became very poor and died after a long illness near Berdychiv.
