He is known for helping magic move from the streets into big theaters. People loved his shows because he wanted to delight his audience. He even used the name "The Great Wizard of the North." This name came from the writer Sir Walter Scott. Anderson believed it was a magician's duty to provide entertainment. He was very careful about his work. If a trick did not get an enthusiastic response, he would remove it from his show. He is credited as the first magician to pull a rabbit out of a top hat. He also made the bullet catch illusion very popular around the world.

Anderson's magic shows were full of skill and movement. He used many different illusions to captivate the people watching him. One famous trick involved him dispensing various alcoholic beverages to the audience. This specific act caused a legal debate about temperance in Boston. He also used his daughters, Helen and Alice, to help with his performances. His daughters grew up to be successful magicians themselves. Anderson was also known for his expert showmanship. He used a lot of advertising to make sure people knew about his shows. This helped him become one of the first magicians to gain world renown.

His life began near Torphins in Aberdeenshire. Anderson was orphaned when he was only ten years old. He started working on stage with a traveling drama company in 1830. By the age of seventeen, he began performing magic. In 1837, he performed at the castle of Lord Panmure. This performance helped him start his own touring show. The show lasted for three years before he moved to London. In 1840, he opened the New Strand Theatre. He later opened the City Theatre in Glasgow in 1845. These steps helped build his long career in the arts.

Anderson traveled to many far-off places to perform. In 1846, he performed at the Covent Garden Theatre in London. He toured Europe and visited Hamburg, Stockholm, and St. Petersburg. In Russia, he met Czar Nicholas I, who arranged a special show for him. In 1849, he performed for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He also toured America, Canada, Australia, and Hawaii in 1850. Life was sometimes hard for him due to money problems. A fire destroyed the Covent Garden Theatre in 1856.

This fire caused him to lose a lot of money. He faced bankruptcy twice during his professional life.

Later in his life, Anderson changed his focus. He wanted to show that some people were using fake magic to trick others. He used his skills to expose the frauds of spiritualists. He believed these people were causing harm to others. Even after his death in 1874, his influence stayed strong.
