These performers are often called escape artists. They show how to get free from many different things. They might escape from handcuffs or heavy chains. Some artists get out of cages or steel boxes. They can even escape from water tanks or burning buildings.

This skill is a way to show great bravery and talent. It makes people feel wonder and suspense while they watch.

There are many ways an artist performs an escape. Some acts rely on technical skills like lock-picking. Others use contortion, which is the ability to bend the body in unusual ways. Some performers use cleverly designed props to make their tricks work.

A predicament escape is a specific kind of stunt. In this act, the performer is trapped in a situation that looks very dangerous. This might include a hanging escape or being trapped in a box of water.

In the past, these skills were used in a very different way. Performers did not always show the escape as a main act. Instead, they used secret escapes to create magic illusions. For example, the Davenport Brothers used rope ties in the 1860s. They used these skills to make it look like spirits were appearing. Later, other magicians like John Nevil Maskelyne showed these were just magic skills. It took thirty years before escaping became its own special show.

Harry Houdini was the person who made escapology a famous entertainment. He was a master of many different kinds of restraints. He could escape from mail bags, beer barrels, and even prison cells.

He even sued others to protect his famous acts. Even today, people call great escape artists "modern-day Houdinis." In 2012, Lucas Wilson set a fast record. He escaped from a straitjacket in 8.4 seconds while hanging upside down.

Escapology is so interesting that it appears in many stories. Many superheroes, like Batman, learn these skills to escape deathtraps. Some comic book heroes, like Mister Miracle, are escape artists by profession. You can also find escapology in movies and books. The novel "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" uses it as an important part of the story. Even the character of Houdini appears in the cartoon "The Real Ghostbusters." It is a skill that continues to capture our imagination.
