People who do this are called mentalists. They act as if they have amazing mental or intuitive abilities. They might seem to read minds or predict the future. They may also show off incredible memory feats. Some people call this mental magic. However, many mentalists say they are different from magicians. They want to create psychological experiences for the mind. They aim to expand reality through the study of human behavior. This makes the audience wonder about the limits of the mind.

To do these feats, mentalists use many clever methods. One way is through suggestion. This is when they plant an idea in a person's mind. They might use subtle words or gestures to do this. They also use misdirection, which is a way to distract people. A mentalist might use big movements or loud music to hide a secret move. Another method is called cold reading. This is when they make smart guesses by watching a person. They look at facial expressions and body language to learn things. They use these cues to make accurate guesses about a person.

Some mentalists also use a method called hot reading. This involves gathering information about people before the show starts. They might learn facts about a participant in advance. This allows them to reveal secrets that seem impossible to know. It is important that they do this in an ethical way. Most professional mentalists will tell the audience if they use this method. They might also get permission from the person first. This ensures the performance remains fair and honest for everyone involved.

The history of mentalism goes back a very long time. Accounts of people with special insights appear in the Old Testament. You can also find stories of oracles in ancient Greece. One of the earliest modern acts was in 1572. A man named Girolamo Scotto performed a mentalist act then. Much of what we see today comes from the 19th century. During that time, people held many tests of supernatural power. Modern mentalists now add science to these old traditions. They use insights from psychology to create their shows.

Mentalists can perform in many different ways today. Some do strolling performances where they walk among small groups. Others perform big stage shows for huge audiences. Some performers, like Derren Brown, explain their acts as psychological experiments. They use natural skills like reading body language. Other performers, like Max Maven, are called mystery theorists. They want to explore the mysterious parts of the human mind. Whether they are on a street or a stage, they create mystery. They leave the audience to decide what is truly possible.
