The word occult comes from a Latin term meaning "hidden" or "secret."

It describes beliefs and practices that stay outside of science and organized religion. These ideas often involve a hidden agency or secret power. People might use the term to talk about magic or mysticism. It can also cover paranormal ideas like extra-sensory perception. Some thinkers use the word to describe things that are not easily measured.

This makes it different from science, which studies the measurable world.

In the 16th century, people used the term "occult sciences."

This group of studies included astrology, alchemy, and natural magic. Astrology looks at the stars to find meaning. Alchemy was a way of studying how matter changes. Natural magic was another part of this old system. These practices were linked by a belief in hidden forces in nature. Each study had its own rules and ways of working. Some people who practiced one might disagree with the others.

History shows how the word changed over many years. The term "occultism" first appeared in 19th-century France. A man named Éliphas Lévi helped make the term very popular. He wrote an influential book about ritual magic in 1856. Later, a Russian woman named Helena Blavatsky brought the word to English. She wrote about it in an 1875 article. Since then, many different authors have used the word in their own ways. Some used it to mean many different things.

There are many different groups that follow these traditions today.

Some famous examples include Wicca and the New Age movement. Other groups are called Theosophy or Anthroposophy. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is another well-known group. Some people also study the Qabalah or the left-hand and right-hand paths. Scholars today use the term to group these different currents together. They study how these traditions grew from the mid-19th century onward.

Many people use these ideas to connect different parts of life. Some try to find a way to bridge science and religion. They want to bring mystery back to a modern, scientific world. They seek a balance between new progress and ancient wisdom. Some groups even try to use scientific tests to prove their ideas. They want to find a middle ground between faith and facts. This helps them feel connected to a much larger vision of the universe.
