The word occult comes from a Latin word. It means "hidden" or "secret."

People use this word to talk about beliefs that feel hidden. These ideas are often different from science. Science studies what we can measure. The occult focuses on things like magic and mystery.

In the 1500s, people spoke of "occult sciences." This included things like alchemy and astrology. Astrology is the study of how stars affect us. Alchemy was an old way of trying to change matter. In the 1800s, the word "occultism" became more common in France. A man named Éliphas Lévi helped make the term popular. Later, Helena Blavatsky brought the term to the English language.

Many different groups follow these ideas today. Some groups are called the New Age movement. Others include Wicca or Theosophy. Some people use these ideas to try and bridge the gap between science and religion. They want to find a way to keep mystery in a modern world. They look for a balance between new facts and old wisdom.
