Hypnosis is a special state of mind that involves focused attention.

When someone is hypnotized, they often have reduced peripheral awareness. This means they do not notice as much of what is happening around them. They also become more likely to respond to suggestions. A suggestion is an idea or instruction given to a person. Some people use this for therapy, which is called hypnotherapy. Others use it for entertainment on a stage.

Scientists still debate exactly how this state works.

There are two main ways to think about hypnosis. Some people believe in altered state theories. These theories say hypnosis is a trance. A trance is a level of awareness different from being awake. Other people believe in non-state theories. These theories suggest hypnosis is a type of placebo effect. A placebo effect happens when someone responds to a treatment because they expect it to work. Some think it is just a form of imaginative role enactment. This means a person acts "as if" they are hypnotized.

History shows how our understanding of hypnosis has changed. The words come from a term called neuro-hypnotism. This term was created by Étienne Félix d'Henin de Cuvillers in the 1820s. The word hypnosis comes from the Greek word for sleep. James Braid helped make these words popular in English around 1841. Braid used a method called "eye-fixation." This involved having a person stare at one specific spot. He based his work on the ideas of Franz Mesmer. However, Braid had a different theory about how it worked.

Many different ideas exist about how hypnosis starts. Most hypnosis begins with a process called induction. An induction is a series of instructions used to help a person focus. One famous method is the eye-fixation technique. This is used in the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale. This scale is a common tool used in research. Some researchers say there are 30 to 50 different stages of trance. In 1941, Robert White noted that many techniques use relaxation. He said most involve reclining, relaxing muscles, and closing the eyes.

People also use different ways to give suggestions. Some use direct verbal suggestions. These are plain instructions given out loud. Others use indirect suggestions, like metaphors or stories. Some people believe suggestions reach the unconscious mind. This is the part of the mind that works deep inside us. Others believe suggestions only reach the conscious mind. This is the part of the mind we use to think every day. One interesting idea is the ideo-motor reflex. This is when a simple idea causes a small muscle movement. For example, thinking of a lemon might cause a physical reaction.
