Subconscious

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The subconscious is a part of your mind. It stays hidden when you focus on something else. Scientists call this focal awareness. Your mind can only hold a few things at once. Some experts say you can only hold seven items. Everything else stays in a deep storehouse. This storehouse holds your past knowledge and experiences.

This hidden part works like a giant library. It keeps all the information you are not using right now. When you focus on a task, you use your conscious mind. The rest of your knowledge waits in the subconscious. Carl Jung believed we need this extra space. He said it holds the things we are not thinking about. This allows your mind to manage so much information.

People have studied this idea for a long time. John Norris used a similar word in 1708. Later, Pierre Janet wrote about it in 1889. He believed a powerful awareness lived under our active thoughts. Sigmund Freud also used the term in 1893. However, he later stopped using it. He preferred the word unconscious instead. He felt the term subconscious was not clear enough.

Joseph Murphy wrote a famous book in 1963. He called it The Power of Your Subconscious Mind. He said the subconscious works like a syllogism. A syllogism is a way of thinking in steps. If you believe a starting idea is true, your mind follows it. For example, if you believe kindness is good, your mind accepts it. Murphy said you can use positive ideas to help yourself.

Some people use special tools to reach this part of the mind. They might use affirmations or hypnosis. An affirmation is a positive statement you say to yourself. Others use subliminal messages or binaural beats. Some people believe these tools can even cure sickness. However, many scientists are skeptical of these claims. They say these ideas are hard to measure or test.
