Subconscious

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Your mind has many layers. Most of the time, you focus on one thing. This is called focal awareness. You can only hold a few things in your mind at once. Some people say you can only hold seven things. Everything else stays in a hidden part of your mind. This part is the subconscious.

Think of the subconscious as a big storehouse. It holds all your old memories and what you have learned. A man named Carl Jung said we need this storehouse. It holds the knowledge we are not thinking about right now.

Some people believe the subconscious is very powerful. Joseph Murphy wrote a book about it in 1963. He said it works like a set of steps called a syllogism. If you believe something is true, your subconscious follows that idea. People use tools like affirmations to try to use this power. An affirmation is a positive statement you say to yourself.

Many doctors use a different word. They use the term unconscious. Sigmund Freud used the word subconscious at first. Later, he stopped using it. He felt the word was not clear enough for his work.
