As a young man, Quimby was very ill. He had a disease called consumption. Doctors gave him medicine that hurt his teeth. Quimby tried his own way to feel better. He found that fast movement helped his pain. This made him think the mind could help the body.

Quimby was also a maker of clocks. He held several patents for new tools. He made a tool for cutting wood. He also made a lock and a way to steer ships.

Later, Quimby became known for his healing work. He did not use any medicine. He would sit with a person and talk. He told them what he believed they felt. He said that finding the truth was the cure. He worked with a young man named Lucius Burkmar. They traveled to show their work to large crowds.

Many people were connected to his ideas. One famous woman, Mary Baker Eddy, sought his help. She later started a faith called Christian Science. Quimby's son, George, worked to protect his father's name. He wanted people to know his father's work was different from that faith.
