Braid is most famous for his work with hypnotism. This is a way to use the mind to help the body. Before his work, many people believed in animal magnetism. They thought a special force moved between people. Braid did not believe this was true. He went to see a man named Charles Lafontaine. Lafontaine showed how he could change how people acted. Braid watched very closely. He saw that the patients were in a different state. Braid found that the power came from the person being hypnotized. He said the mind has hidden powers. These powers just need a little help to wake up. Because of this work, some call him the "Father of Modern Hypnotism."
