Braid is best known for his work with hypnotism. Before his discoveries, people believed in animal magnetism. They thought a special force moved from one person to another. Braid did not believe this force was real. He went to watch a performer named Charles Lafontaine in 1841.

Braid watched how the patients' bodies changed. He noticed they could not open their eyelids. He concluded that no outside force was acting on them. Instead, he found that the power came from the person's own mind. The mind has hidden abilities that can be woken up.

We can see Braid's influence in how doctors work today. Some people call him the "Father of Modern Hypnotism." His work helped lead to the use of hypnotic anesthesia. This is a way to help patients during medical procedures. He also helped make chemical anesthesia more common. Braid believed that the mind and body were closely linked. He did not think hypnotism could fix every problem. He believed doctors should use many different kinds of treatments. His ideas helped change how we understand the power of the mind.
