He lived in Scotland during the 1800s. He worked as a clergyman and a writer. He was also a scientist who studied the stars. People remember him most for his work with maps. He was a cartographer, which is a person who makes maps. He also worked as a sculptor and a publisher. His many jobs helped him see the world in different ways.

Making maps is a very hard job. The Earth is a round shape like a ball. It is difficult to make a round object look flat on paper.

James worked on a way to fix this. He used a method called the Gall orthographic projection. This was a way to show the stars on flat paper. It helped keep the shapes of constellations looking correct. He later used this same idea to make maps of the Earth. This method helps show the world without changing the shapes too much.

James was born on 27 September 1808. His father, James Gall, was a printer in Edinburgh. The family ran a company called Gall & Inglis.

James learned to be a printer in his father's shop. He later studied at the University of Edinburgh. In 1849, he decided to become a minister. He studied at New College in Edinburgh. He graduated in 1855 and started a mission at Carrubbers Close. He later led the Moray Free Church on Holyrood Road.

James cared deeply about helping all people learn. He wanted maps to be easy for everyone to use. He specifically thought about how blind people could use maps.

He suggested using Braille printing for maps. He also thought about using twine to show lines. This would let people feel the paths with their fingers. In 1851, his firm published a book with a map like this. It used raised borders to show different areas.

James Gall had a very busy and full life. He wrote many books about the stars and the Bible. One book was called The Stars and the Angels. He even wrote about different races on other worlds.
