James Gall was a man from Scotland with many talents.

He was a map maker, a writer, and a star watcher. He also worked as a minister for a church.

James studied how to make maps on flat paper. This is hard because the Earth is round. He made a special way to draw the stars. This helped keep the shapes of the star groups correct. He used this same way to make maps of the Earth. Later, a man named Arno Peters used a similar way. Now, people call this the Gall-Peters projection.

James wanted all people to use maps. He thought about blind people. He suggested using string and raised bumps on paper. This helped people feel the lines with their hands.

James lived in a city called Edinburgh. He worked with his father in a printing shop. His father made special letters for blind people too. James wrote many books about the stars and the Bible. When he died, over 600 people came to his funeral.
