As a boy, Gall noticed things about his classmates. He saw that some had different head shapes. He thought these shapes showed how they acted. He thought people with big eyes were very smart. Later, he studied medicine at a university. He also worked at a hospital for the sick.

Gall developed a theory called phrenology. This was the study of how the skull shape shows personality. He believed the brain had many parts. He called these parts fundamental faculties. He thought each part had one job. Some parts helped with poetry or memory. He thought bumps on the head came from the brain pushing out. To test this, he looked at over 120 skulls.

Many people thought his ideas were wrong. They said he had no proof. Some scientists even tested animals to show him he was incorrect. Gall had to move to different cities to teach. We know now that phrenology is a pseudoscience. This means it is a study that is not based on real science. Still, his work helped start the study of the brain we use today.
