Lombroso had a very different idea about crime. Many people thought people chose to do wrong. Lombroso thought crime was something people were born with. He called this idea atavism. He believed some people were like "throwbacks" to early humans. He thought you could spot these people by their bodies.

He looked for many physical signs. He studied the shape of skulls and the size of ears. He even thought tattoos might show a person's character. He believed some criminals had less feeling when touched. He also thought they might be left-handed.

Later, other scientists studied these ideas. They used math to show Lombroso was wrong. They found no real link between looks and crime. Even so, his work changed how we study the mind. His ideas helped start new types of hospitals for mental health.
