Boas used four main ways to study humans. He looked at culture, language, bodies, and old tools. He believed that people learn how to act from others. He said our bodies do not decide our culture. This was a very big idea.

Boas also taught cultural relativism. This means we should not judge other groups. We must try to understand them by their own rules. He did not think one group was better than another. He wanted to protect small groups of people. He used science to help others understand society.

He also used a way called historical particularism. This means every group has its own history. Each group grows in its own way. Boas had many students. They started many new schools in the United States. Some of his students were Ruth Benedict and Margaret Mead. They helped make his ideas spread far and wide.
