Hans Gross was a man from Austria. He was born on December 26, 1847. He studied law for many years. Later, he worked as a judge. He saw that the law had many faults. Back then, there were very few crime investigators. Many people in court relied on their own guesses. This was not a good way to find the truth.

Gross wanted to use science to help. He believed in using facts and logic. He taught people to look at the crime scene. He used new tools like X-rays and fingerprints. He also used photography to take pictures of clues. He even studied things like chemistry and botany to find facts.

In 1893, he wrote a very important book. It was a textbook to help judges. He wrote about why people do bad things. He also studied how people act. Because of his work, many people call him the "Founding Father" of criminal profiling. He started a special school in Graz to teach these ideas. His work changed how the world looks for the truth.
