Juan Vucetich was a man with a big idea.

He was born in 1858 in a place called Dalmatia. He later moved to Argentina in 1884. Vucetich worked for the police. He helped start a new way to identify people. This way used fingerprints. We call this study dactyloscopy.

In 1891, he began to file fingerprints. He used ideas from a man named Francis Galton. Vucetich made these ideas much better. In 1892, his method solved a crime. A woman named Francisca Rojas had hurt her children. She tried to blame someone else. But a bloody print showed she did it. This was the first time a print identified a criminal.

Argentine police began to use his system. Soon, police all over the world used it too. Vucetich wrote a book about his work in 1904. He died in 1925. Today, many places honor him. A police academy in Argentina has his name. A science center in Croatia also uses his name.
