Archer wanted to take better photos. Old ways of taking photos were not very clear. They also took a long time. In 1848, Archer made a new way to take pictures. He called this the collodion process. This new way made very sharp and clear images. It also let people make many paper copies. Archer did not patent his idea. A patent is a way to own an idea so you can make money. He gave his idea to the world for free. This helped many people become photographers. Because he did not charge for his idea, he did not make much money. He died in 1857 from a liver disease.
