These plates were made of glass or metal. They had a coating called an emulsion. This coating is light-sensitive. It means it changes when light hits it.

Glass plates were very helpful for science. They are very flat and stable. They do not bend or shrink like plastic film. This made them great for looking at stars. Astronomers used plates to find new things in space. They found the planet Pluto using these plates. They also found Pluto's moon, Charon.

Plates were useful in other ways too. They helped scientists study tiny particles. They also helped doctors see inside the body with X-rays. Many people use film or digital tools now. But plates are still used for special art. Some people even make their own plates today. They use old ways to make new art.
