They do this by letting germs reproduce in special food. This food is called a medium.

Some food is a liquid called a broth. This helps scientists grow large amounts of bacteria. Other food is a solid jelly. Scientists use agar to make this jelly. Agar comes from seaweed.

They often grow these in round dishes.

Growing cultures helps doctors find out why people get sick. For example, they can test a throat sample. This helps them find the germs that cause strep throat.

Scientists also try to make a pure culture. This means they grow only one kind of germ. They might start with just one single cell. This way, all the new cells are exactly the same.

Some scientists use special media to pick certain germs. This is called selective media. It lets one kind grow but stops others. Other media can change color. This helps scientists identify what the germ is.

This helps us study the tiny world.
