A microbial culture is a way to grow tiny living things in a lab.

Scientists use this method to let microbes reproduce in a special food called a medium. This process is very important for medical research and finding out why people get sick. For example, a doctor might take a sample from the back of a throat. They look for germs like Streptococcus pyogenes, which causes strep throat. By growing the sample, they can see if the harmful germ is there. This helps them understand how many germs are in the sample.

There are different ways to grow these microbes depending on the goal. Some scientists use a liquid called broth in an upright flask. This is great for growing very large amounts of bacteria quickly. Other scientists use a solid jelly to grow microbes on a flat surface. They often use agar, which is a substance made from seaweed, to make this jelly.

They might also use a method called a streak plate. This involves spreading the microbes back and forth with a small loop. This helps separate the tiny living things so they grow into individual colonies.

Learning how to grow microbes has a long history. The first culture media were liquids made by Louis Pasteur in 1860. Later, Robert Koch developed solid media in 1881. This changed how scientists worked in the laboratory. In 1887, Julius Richard Petri created a round box for solid media. This is the round dish many people recognize today. Since those early inventions, many new ways to grow and study microbes have been made.

Scientists often try to create a pure culture. A pure culture means only one type of living thing is growing. This can start from just one single cell. Because the new cells come from that one cell, they are all genetic clones. This means they are exactly the same.

Scientists also use special media to pick out specific germs. Selective media allows one kind to grow but stops others. Differential media can even change color to show different traits. This helps scientists identify exactly which microbe they are looking at.

Microbial cultures are used in many parts of science today. They help researchers study everything from single-celled yeast to tiny viruses. Even cells from very large animals can be grown in a lab. This lets scientists study specific parts of a living thing without using the whole organism. There are even big collections of these cultures kept in special places. These include the American Type Culture Collection in Virginia. These collections help scientists all over the world share and study life.
