A magic lantern is an early tool for showing pictures.

It works by using a light source and a lens. The light shines through a glass slide. These slides have small pictures on them.

Early slides were often hand-painted on glass. Later, people made printed slides. Some slides even used colored paint to look bright.

To show the image, the lantern uses a special way. A mirror behind the light pushes the light forward. The light goes through the slide and then through a lens. This lens makes the image look much larger on a wall.

A single lens turns the picture upside down. Because of this, people must put the slides in upside down. This makes the picture look right on the wall.

People used these for fun and for school. In the 1600s, the light came from candles or oil lamps. These lights were quite dim. Later, new lamps made the images much brighter. By the 1860s, electric lights were used. This made the magic lantern safer and easier to use.
