Photographic film is a thin strip used to take pictures.

It has a base coated with a gelatin emulsion. This coating contains tiny crystals called silver halide. These crystals are sensitive to light.

When you take a photo, light hits the film. This causes a tiny chemical change in the crystals. This change makes an invisible latent image. You cannot see it yet. You must use chemicals to make the image visible. This is called developing.

In black-and-white film, the crystals turn into silver. This silver looks black and blocks light. Color film is more complex. It has at least three sensitive layers. These layers use special dyes to show colors. During development, the silver is turned into colored dyes.

After the colors form, a bleach step happens. This step turns the silver back into crystals. Then, a solution called fixer removes the extra crystals. This leaves only the dyes behind. These dyes make the final colored image. Some films can even see X-rays or infrared light.
