He studied how the body uses air. He often tested his ideas on himself. He would sit in sealed rooms to breathe different gases. This helped him learn how they affect the mind and body.

Haldane looked at many ways to keep people safe. He studied gases in deep coal mines. He found that some gases can be very dangerous. He showed how a flame lamp could find these gases.

He also studied how low air pressure affects breathing. He led a trip to Pike's Peak to study this.

He helped divers stay safe underwater. He used goats to study how pressure changes affect the body. He made math tables to help divers rise to the surface in steps. This is called staged decompression. This method is still used today.

During World War I, he worked with gases used in war. He invented a mask called the Black Veil Respirator. He also made oxygen tents to help people breathe. His many discoveries helped people work in mines, dive in oceans, and breathe in high places.
