Muller spent much of his life working with fruit flies. He used these tiny flies to learn about life. In 1926, he made a big discovery. He found that X-rays can cause mutations. Mutations are changes in the genes of a living thing. Muller showed that X-rays cause these changes to happen. This work was very important for science.

Because of this discovery, Muller won the Nobel Prize in 1946. This is a very special award for scientists. Muller also used his voice to help people. He warned that radiation could be a danger to humans. He spoke about the risks of nuclear testing. His warnings helped people think more about safety.

Muller lived in many places during his life. He worked in New York, Texas, and even Europe. He spent time in the Soviet Union and Germany too. Later, he lived in Bloomington, Indiana.
