He was born in 1848 in the Netherlands. He loved to study how plants grow.

Hugo had big ideas about how life works. He thought traits come in tiny pieces. He called these pieces pangenes. Later, people began to call them genes.

He studied many different kinds of plants to prove this. He even rediscovered some laws of how traits are passed down.

One day, Hugo found new kinds of flowers. They grew in an old potato field. These flowers looked different from the others. He called these sudden changes mutations. He thought mutations could help new species form. This was part of his mutation theory.

Hugo was a very important teacher. He worked at the University of Amsterdam for many years. He also ran a large botanical garden. He won many prizes for his hard work. He studied plants in his own gardens until he died in 1935.
